Ellie Grace is fighting for her life after she was born three months premature after he mother was involved in a fatal car crash.

HOUSTON -- Newborn Ellie Grace is fighting for her life in the neo-natal intensive care unit at Memorial Hermann Hospital. She was delivered after her mother, Monica Ramirez, crashed her truck into a building and later died.

"It brought us peace to know her baby survived," said Joe Ramirez, Monica's brother. "It's difficult. It's difficult for any family.

Ellie was born three months early.

"For a premature baby, she is doing really well.," said Briana Church, the victim's sister. "We are taking it one day at a time."

Meanwhile, authorities are still looking into the events surrounding Ramirez's death.

Investigators believe she got into an argument with her boyfriend, and, after he started following her, they both lost control and then crashed into a building near West Beltway 8.

Court records show Ramirez was granted a protective order against her boyfriend last August. She accused him of kicking, stomping and dragging her.

At this point, no charges have been filed in connection with Ramirez's death.

"We just want answers," said Church. "You ask the question 'why?' every day."

The family has set up a Go Fund Me account to help pay for Ellie Grace's medical expenses and Ramirez's funeral.

In just one day, the family raised more than $3,000.

"It's giving our family a chance to take care of our miracle," said Church.
