HOUSTON — Just days away from the start of hurricane season, Harris County officials want you to know they are doing everything they can to help Houston become more resilient when it comes to flooding.
That includes the construction of a brand new detention pond.
“It’s the first time in 20 years that we are 100 percent sure we have the funding to complete this project," Matthew Zeve with Harris County Flood Control District said.
It’s a detention pond, 20 years in the making.
“Over 300 Olympic swimming pools of detention to collect water," County Judge Lina Hidalgo said.
Just months away from completion, Harris County is giving final details on the Homestead Storm Water Detention Basin, as part of the Hunting Bayou Federal Project that promises to lower the flooding risk in Kashmere Gardens.
“The reality is we have faced the issue of flooding since our community was founded," Hidalgo said.
The $130 million dollar project is just one of 146 active projects in the works, with more to come.
So far, in the Brays Bayou Project, 21 miles of the bayou have been widened, 16 of the 32 bridges have been replaced or adjusted, and four detention ponds have been built.
To help you keep track of everything, the county is also announcing they’ve launched a new website. Harristhrives.org will give you updates on flood funding and the projects happening near your home.
“That can truly inform the community about where we’re headed, and how we’re building a more resilient Harris County," Hidalgo said.
