GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - A $17 parking ticket isn't proving to be a deterrent as RV owners jockey for parking spaces along the Galveston Seawall during Mardi Gras in Galveston.
Police tell The Galveston County Daily News (http://bit.ly/1M2Lyzc ) they slapped 60 tickets on illegally parked vehicles last Thursday and Friday. Normally, only a couple are written for an entire week.
The city bans overnight camping on the seawall throughout the year, and no parking is allowed between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m.
But the $17 camping penalty - and an apparent hollow threat to tow vehicles illegally parked - is cheap compared to the up to $200 for some hotel rooms along Seawall Boulevard during Mardi Gras weekends.
Police say carrying out the towing threat is difficult because some RVs also are pulling trailers.
