CYPRESS – Residents are breaking ground on a new memorial for Deputy Darren Goforth. Thursday afternoon, they invited only our cameras in for a sneak peak to see how they're honoring the fallen deputy.
It's a sacred spot: A spot fallen Deputy Darren Goforth passed everyday on duty.
"To bring peace and tranquility back to the community," said Robert Partin, a neighbor and friend of the Goforth family.
"He wasn't a stranger, he didn't have to introduce himself," said resident Leslie Martone.
Now, in the Stone Gate community he patrolled in Cypress, neighbors are building a living memorial to honor him.
"It will be a circle concrete platform that goes probably 35-36 feet across," said Partin.
There are plans for a place for prayer, oak trees and a blue bench to honor law enforcement. They picked this spot because it's peaceful. Neighbors wanted those close to Goforth, especially his family, to have a place to heal.
"People driving by can have a moment to themselves or with their family in their car or if they want to stop and have that moment of silence or prayer with their family," said Martone.
"If it brings one person peace of mind or heals their heart, and I hope that's Kathleen, then we've done our job," said Partin.
A job to remind everyone who drives by this spot of their dear friend Darren. The memorial is inside the gated community and is intended to be a private place for Stone Gate residents to pay their respects.
