LA PORTE, Texas - La Porte fire officials say a 5-year-old boy and an adult male have died after a fire broke out at their home early Wednesday morning.
Authorities were called to the 3800 block of Teakwood before 4 a.m. after an 11-year-old girl, that family identified as Carleigh, woke up to the blaze. The girl ran from the home and told neighbors to call 911.
"She knocked on our door at 3 or 3:30 this morning," said neighbor Brandi Barton. "She was beating on it, ringing the doorbell."
Carleigh's 5-year-old brother, identified as Shane Owens by the medical examiner, and her stepfather, Bobby Owens, were still inside the home. According to fire officials, the stepfather was trying to save his son.
The neighbor says they called 911 and Carleigh's mother, a nurse already at work.
"I said I don't want you to freak out but the house is fully engulfed in flames," said Barton. "I didn't want her to come home and think the toaster was on the fritz and the daughter came out. She was panicked and screaming trying to figure out what was going on. She was screaming and crying asking where the baby was."
Police were the first on the scene and tried to use a garden hose to knock down the flames, but they were unable to force their way into the burning home.
La Porte and Deer Park firefighters arrived and pulled the 5-year-old boy from the home. CPR was in progress as the child was taken to the hospital where he later died.
A man's body, who family members say is the father, was also found in the home.
The 11-year-old girl was treated for smoke inhalation. Family members, not on scene at the time of the fire, were notified and remain with the girl at Bayshore hospital.
Two separate gofundme pages have been set up to help the family with funeral expenses, http://www.gofundme.com/e8hxic & http://www.gofundme.com/y33rtwfc. According to family, most of the items in the home were destroyed so monetary donations will also go towards helping the family get back on their feet.
A makeshift donation center where people can drop off material donations like clothes, bedding, etc, has also been setup at M & B Tools, located at 1024 Pasadena Fwy, Pasadena, TX 77506.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown. Representatives from the City of La Porte Fire Marshall's Office are conducting an investigation.
