HOUSTON – The Houston Fire Department says former Fire Chief Edward "Eddie" Corral passed away over the weekend at the age of 84.
According to HFD, Corral joined the department in 1956 and served for 50 years.
"Chief Corral was considered a trailblazer by many, he was the fourth Hispanic to join the department, and was appointed as the first Hispanic Fire Chief in the City Houston by former Mayor Bob Lanier. Chief Corral is survived by his wife Rima and two sons Robert and Eddie Jr.," the department stated in a press release.
"My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Rima and their sons Robert and Eddie Jr., it is an honor to carry the title held by such a revered and beloved figure," said current Fire Chief Terry Garrison.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
