LIVINGSTON, Texas — Three children and their mother were killed Thursday in a head-on crash in Livingston, Polk County Department of Public Safety said.
Just after 10 p.m. on Highway 146 near Millgate Road, a Buick was heading south while a GMC Sierra was going north. Troopers said the driver of the Buick lost control of the vehicle, crossed over into oncoming traffic, and slammed into the GMC.
It is not known what caused her to lose control of the vehicle.
Shemikia Brown, 34, was identified as the driver of the Buick. She along with three of her children — Kyah, 13; Peyton, 11; and Justice, 2 -- were killed in the crash, troopers said. Another one of Brown's children, Aubree, 6, was also riding in the Buick. She was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The man who was driving the GMC was not injured, troopers said.
Brown’s partner said Brown and the kids had just left football practice. She said the kids were Brown’s “whole world.”
Investigators are trying to figure out what caused Brown to lose control.
The family is now left with four funerals to plan and pay for and hospital bills for the surviving child. A GoFundMe has been set up to help pay for those expenses.
