HOUSTON — A Houston mother now finds herself in a difficult situation as she has to bury her three daughters who died in a condo fire and also has to find a new place to live.
Meybis Zelaya told KHOU 11 News she was at work when she got the call. With a broken heart, Meybi Zelaya is sharing her pain with us.
"No se como asimilarlo no lo acepto. No puedo manejarlo por que es mas duro," she said.
Zelaya said she couldn’t come to terms with the loss of her three youngest daughters—15-year-old Evelen, 11-year-old Julisa and 8-year-old Ana Zelaya.
The girls died after a fire ripped through their condo early Sunday morning.
Zelaya calls it the hardest experience of her life.
"Siempre estaban felices ellas," said Zelaya.
She said her daughters were always very happy and always together. Zelaya had already left for work when the fire broke out.
"A passerby had called in there was fire coming out," said Houston Fire Chief Thomas Muñoz.
Zelaya's 21-year-old son was also inside sleeping. He was able to get out and also tried to get his sisters out.
"He made some attempts to get back in. He was transported for minor injuries and smoke inhalation," Muñoz said.
On Monday, friends and neighbors helped sell plates, made signs and asked for donations on street corners for the Zelaya family.
Zelaya's son, who is out of the hospital, is also hoping to collect money to help his mom bury his youngest sisters.
"Siempre bien unidas, héramos un equipo," said Zelaya.
Zelaya said she lost her team. Despite the age difference, she said they were always very united.
"Alegres inteligentes llenas de sueños. Estaban llenas de vida. Mis 3 angelitas," said Zelaya.
Her three angels were intelligent, full of dreams, and were her life. Now, she doesn’t know how to move forward without them.
Zelaya said they don't have the money to bury the girls and need the community's help.
We did reach out to Congressman Al Green’s Office. They said they would try and work with the family to help with housing. Also, the Red Cross is providing them with a hotel.
