HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Focusing on mental health is one of those New Year resolutions, and Harris County Precinct 2 County Commissioner Adiran Garcia is reminding people of a free resource available right now.
It's called Access2Health Mental Health Smart Pod.
Garcia said the Smart Pod is unique as it brings access directly to the community. He said Precinct 2, which covers much of east and southeast Harris County, has a life expectancy 20 years lower than the county’s average.
When you think about social determinants of health, limited access to mental health also has negative impacts.
The pod, he said, is one way to address the stigma of mental health. He said it can be scary walking into a traditional healthcare space. So, the hope is to normalize it by making mental health support available in communities the one near James Driver All-inclusive Park. Partnerships with Catholic Charities and Harris Center help keep it running for free.
Garcia said his district is one of the most underserved and has the lowest median income so making it accessible and affordable iss critical.
"The blues kick in as people tend to say. People tend to reflect on the loved one that may not be there to open their gifts this year. Whether it’s from the pandemic or other circumstances. The holiday seasons do tend to create a lot of anxiety," Garcia said.
Mental support is available in English and Spanish for adults and children. It's best to make an appointment but walk-ins are welcome.
