'A pattern of irregularities' | Memorial Hermann in Texas Medical Center puts liver donation program on hold

Memorial Hermann officials didn't release specifics but said the issue is with data.

HOUSTON — Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center put its liver transplant program on hold after hospital administrators said they learned of "a pattern of irregularities" with donor acceptance criteria.

Donor acceptance criteria, the hospital said, includes information like weight and age of deceased liver donors.

The hospital didn’t give specifics as to what the irregularities were but did send a statement. In it, hospital officials noted the issues were with the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) transplant information database. That database is for patients on the liver transplant waiting list at Memorial Hermann.

Memorial Hermann said when it learned of the issue, the hospital voluntarily suspended the liver donor program. It also said it was investigating and cooperating with regulatory agencies.

Memorial Hermann said other donation programs at the hospital weren't affected.

The hospital said they’re working with families and patients who are waiting on a liver transplant.

This is a developing story. As we learn more, we'll post it online.
