Mary Lou Retton released from hospital after battling rare form of pneumonia, daughter says

Daughter McKenna Kelley posted a little after noon on Monday the news about her mother, who had been hospitalized with pneumonia.

HOUSTON — Houston gymnastics icon Mary Lou Retton is back at home, according to her daughters. She had been in the hospital for more than two weeks

“We still have a long road of recovery ahead of us,” oldest daughter Shaley Schrepfer wrote. “But baby steps.”

McKenna Kelley, who posted the original message about her mother's hospitalization, also shared a graphic on her Instagram account with the news.

"Grateful doesn't even scrape the surface of the posture of our hearts," McKenna posted. You can read the full post here.

Retton was in the ICU after being hospitalized earlier this month for a rare form of pneumonia, according to her family. On Oct. 10, McKenna said Retton couldn't breathe on her own and was "fighting for her life."

Her daughter Shayla had shared on Friday an update on Retton's condition to Instagram saying her mother "had a pretty scary setback" after being on the up and up earlier in the week. She didn't share details of the setback.

"She had a better day [Wednesday}, which is great, just really, really exhausted," Shayla said in her post.

Retton, the gold-medal-winning gymnast who became known as "America's sweetheart" after the 1984 Olympics, lives in the Houston area.

Crowdfunding account for Mary Lou Retton far exceeds goal

As of Monday, Oct. 23, the Spotfund account for Retton was up to nearly $460,000, including a $50,000 donation from Houston's Linda McIngvale, wife and business partner of Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale.

The family set a goal of $50,000 to help cover Retton's medical expenses.
