CROSBY, Texas — A woman has died and her boyfriend is hospitalized in critical condition after both were struck in a hit-and-run crash late Friday in northeast Harris County, the sheriff's office confirmed.
It happened on a dark and narrow road about 6:50 p.m. in the 8700 block of Krenek Road near the Crosby Freeway.
Investigators said the couple was walking home from a nearby Walmart when they were hit and the driver didn't stop.
Eric Elbers, an investigator with the Harris County Sheriff's Office, said the 87-year-old driver involved may suffer from dementia or some other medical impairment.
Both victims were Life Flighted to Memorial Hermann in the Texas Medical Center.
The 28-year-old woman was pronounced dead within hours of her arrival. It was last reported 20-year-old man is still fighting for his life.
While investigating the scene, Elbers said officers got a call about a suspicious black Lexus about a mile away, in the 400 block of Runneburg Road.
He said the vehicle had damage and other signs, including strands of one victim's hair, that suggested it had been involved in the crash. Elbers said the driver didn't show signs of intoxication, but he was confused.
"Our investigators would be talking to him, and then he would lose track of what he was talking about," Elbers said.
The driver was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
Investigators said Atkins and Cueller failed to give the driver the right away, but since the vehicle left the scene, it's being investigated as a hit-and-run crash.
No charges have been filed, but investigators said the district attorney's office is reviewing the case.
