DEER PARK, Texas — A home surveillance camera caught the sound of sirens Wednesday morning followed by multiple gunshots fired at a man by Deer Park police officers.
They were responding to calls about a guy terrorizing people in cars.
Investigators said the man was at the intersection of East Blvd and East P Street with knives in his hands, kicking at vehicles and banging on windows.
"Initially, they gave verbal commands which he didn’t comply with," Deer Park Police Lt. Chris Brown said.
The officers tried to use a Taser but it didn't work.
"He then charged at officers at which time there was an officer-involved shooting," Brown said.
The man died at the scene. No one else was hurt.
Neighbor Kimberly Hanna said she encountered the man with something in his hand while walking her dogs shortly before the shooting.
"And I said, 'Good morning,' and he just kind of gazed straight through me," Hanna told us.
She suspected he may have been on drugs or suffering from some mental episode.
“I feel very lucky that he didn’t turn on me when I passed him,” Hanna said.
The busy intersection was closed to traffic for hours as many wondered what was going on.
The officers involved in the shooting are on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation although police believe protocols were properly followed.
The name of the man who was killed hasn't been released.
