Liberty County Constable returns home after being critically injured in crash

A Liberty County Constable who was critically injured in a crash while directing traffic was discharged from the hospital and returned home on Saturday.

Constable Justin Johnston was directing traffic on Highway 146 near Dayton when he was hit by an oncoming vehicle on February 15, 2017.

He was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital by Life Flight and was placed in ICU. He was on a ventilator and in a medically induced coma for several days.

Constable Johnston was with six other officers when a driver in a pickup truck plowed through barricades and hit him.

Members of the the community held a prayer service for the deputy a few days after the accident at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Liberty.

About a week after the accident the Constable seemed to be improving but then became unresponsive while in the hospital, causing his family to fear the worst.

However, since then his health has improved so much in the last month, he was able to attend rehab and finally go home this weekend.

Crowds lined the street in the officer's neighborhood to welcome him home as he was escorted by fellow officers on Saturday.

Family and friends held balloons and signs in the neighborhood to show support for the officer who has made such a remarkable recovery.
