CONROE, Texas – Lake Conroe will be open to all normal boating activities beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday.
Those on the water should still use extra caution because the lake is still above its normal pool level, officials said.
Boaters should also be aware of floating debris from the recent storms.
Deputy Constables had kept people in motorized boats off Lake Conroe after the San Jacinto River Authority ordered the lake closed because of submerged and floating debris.
With boat docks under water, the only motors allowed on Lake Conroe showed us the hazards.
We saw large two-by-fours with nails, tree stumps, even pieces of private piers lurking between waves.
Deputy Constables with Montgomery County Precinct 1 called the objects potential motorboat "prop killers."
Even during Spring Break, one of the lake's busiest times, patrols are keeping boaters away.
They spent most of Friday corralling boats that drifted away from their docks. They also ran into a few boaters unaware of Lake Conroe's closure.
"(People) being here is how I have a job," said Deputy Constable Matthew Wiese. "We want them to have fun. We want people to come out here and enjoy themselves, especially on big weekends like this, but, when safety dictates, it kind of has to be done."
According to SJRA, Lake Conroe is at least two feet higher than normal. And 4-7 inches of recent rain also pushed debris into the reservoir, SJRA officials said.
Officials are releasing water from the Lake Conroe Dam at a rate of 7,000 cubic feet per second.
