AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department is investigating after a body was found in Lady Bird Lake on Sunday morning.
According to police, a woman in her 60s was found dead in the 300 Zone of the lake, near Brazos and West Cesar Chavez streets.
A kayaker spotted the body in the water around 8:15 a.m. and called 911, APD said.
Investigators with APD believe the woman was homeless and was trying to stay warm. There were no signs of violence or suspicious circumstances.
The medical examiner’s office has not yet released her name or cause of death.
Police do not believe the incident has any connection with previous deaths in the lake. There is no danger to the public.
The incident comes as safety improvements have been made along the lake's trails following several drownings in recent years.
Some of the changes include adding lighting along East Avenue and the trail, putting a camera at the corner of Rainey and Cummings streets and extending the sidewalk along East Avenue.
Fence improvements were also completed this year. A gate was added to the top of the stairs across from the Milago, and signage for wayfinding is being designed in partnership with the Trail Conservancy.
The Trail Conservancy is working on the Rainey Street Trailhead Project that also addresses lighting and signage.
