HTown60: How to prep for the Houston Marathon

There are two things that make the Houston Marathon unique – the flat course and the mild winter temperatures.

HOUSTON — As hundreds of runners get ready for the Houston Marathon, we want to show you the best ways to prepare.

There are two things that make the Houston Marathon unique – the flat course and the mild winter temperatures.

Except this weekend we’re getting hit with an arctic blast!

And you guessed it – the wind and cold – aren’t a good mix for runners. It slows them down and causes them to use up a lot of energy.

“But don’t worry there are still easy steps you can take to prepare for the big race!” Jaime Aparicio, physical therapist at Memorial Hermann Ironman Sports Medical Institute and a Houston Marathon ambassador, said.

First – be sure to hydrate. Second – load up on carbs. Don’t forget to keep the body moving with light exercises.

Get plenty of rest. And do a dress rehearsal – it’s best to layer up and shed as you go.

But most importantly – motivation is key!
