HTown60: Downtown Tunnel System a hidden gem in Houston

First built back in the 1930’s, the tunnel has been growing ever since. It now connects 95 city blocks, so it’s super handy to get from building to building.

HOUSTON — Turns out Houston’s a bustling city both above and below. Did you know we have an underground retail city?

I’m from Houston – so i know a thing or two about this city, but I had no idea there was a hidden gem here in downtown. And to find it you have to venture underground.

Welcome to the Downtown Houston Tunnel System!

Guys, this place is really cool. It’s located 20 feet below downtown’s busy streets and skyscrapers, and it’s more than six miles long!

A girl can really get lost in this place.

“It’s okay, everyone does at least once! But here’s a map – you can find them in any of the buildings!” Angie Bertinot, with the Downtown District, said.

First built back in the 1930’s, the tunnel has been growing ever since. It now connects 95 city blocks, so it’s super handy to get from building to building.

Some call the tunnel an underground retail city. It’s got everything from restaurants to shopping, but the catch is you’ll only find this place open during working hours.

But if you’re up for it, I can tell you there’s definitely an experience waiting for you at the end of the tunnel.

The Houston Underground Tunnel is only open Monday through Friday during working hours. For info on the easiest ways to access it just, tap here.
