Spending spring break in Houston? Here's a plan for all your transit, parking needs

The city has provided a traffic plan for spring breakers to ease through Houston's hottest attractions like the rodeo, museums and the zoo.

HOUSTON — One of Houston's busiest seasons is rapidly approaching and the city has provided a plan for spring breakers to breeze through the area's hottest attractions like the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the Museum District, and the Houston Zoo.

During spring break, an estimated 350,000 cars daily will drive through the 5-mile radius of the area that holds Hermann Park, the Texas Medical Center, and NRG Park, causing traffic delays and high demand for parking.

“Houston is home to so many excellent events and attractions and has become a destination of choice for spring break visitors,” said District A councilmember and vice mayor pro tem, Amy Peck. “As all good hosts do, we have prepared to welcome all with access to parking, minimized route delays, and encourage those heading to these popular areas to plan ahead, explore public transportation options, and be patient on the road.”

Passengers of public transportation may experience longer wait times, but METRO says they will be closely surveying passenger loads on trains and the number of people on rail platforms to avoid overcrowding and a smooth experience.

“METRO looks forward to assisting local residents and visitors to our great city travel to their spring break activities,” said METRO spokeswoman Monica Russo. “METRORail, along with several local bus routes, provide easy-to-use trips to attractions including museums, the Houston Zoo and Rodeo Houston for only $1.25 each way.”

Parking options:

  • Museum District: There is free and paid parking in the Museum District, but spaces may fill early. Visitors can use free and paid public parking in Midtown and Downtown. From there, take METRORail to your destination.
  • Hermann Park/Zoo: Free parking options
