HOUSTON — A police officer was hit while patrolling on the west side Tuesday morning, according to the Houston Police Department.
This happened just after 4 a.m. on Westheimer Road near Wilcrest.
Police said someone crashed into the officer’s patrol car while he was at a stoplight. The car kept going and hit a few business signs before flipping his car over onto the sidewalk.
Officers did have to pull the driver out and HPD believes he was under the influence while driving based on his slurred speech.
The officer who was hit was taken to the hospital after complaining of a headache, and neck and back pain. Officials said the driver who crashed into his patrol car was also taken to the hospital.
The HPD sergeant who spoke to KHOU 11 News, said she's just relieved their fellow officer wasn't killed.
“A hundred percent. That's what we look forward to go home to our families. The officer is remained at the intersection but has heavy damage to the vehicle,” she said,
HPD’s Vehicular Crimes Unit said the driver could be later charged depending on the outcome of the investigation.
