HOUSTON, Texas — The City of Houston has launched a compost pilot program in an effort to cut down on food waste.
This free program is a partnership between the City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department and Zero Waste Houston.
There are four drop-off locations, each open one day a week through Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024.
Monday:
- Kashmere Multi-Service Center, 4802 Lockwood Drive, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Tuesday:
- Acres Homes Multi-Service Center, 6719 W. Montgomery Road, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Wednesday:
- Alief Neighborhood Center, 11903 Bellaire Boulevard, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Thursday:
- Sunnyside Multi-Service Center, 4410 Reed Road, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Items accepted at drop-off:
- Breads and grains
- Coffee grounds and filters
- Dairy
- Egg shells
- Fried food
- Freezer-burned food
- Fruits and vegetables
- Meat and bones
- Moldy food
- Nuts and seeds
- Seafood and shells
- Non-Edibles:
- Compostable utensils
- Compostable bags
- Compostable cups
- Tea bags (staples removed)
- Fur, hair, and nail clippings
- Newspaper
- Old flowers
- Paper napkins and towels
- Vegetarian pet bedding
- Wood ash
Items NOT accepted at drop-off:
- Cat and dog feces
- Diapers
- Glass
- Glossy paper
- Metal
- Plastic or plastic wrap
- Staples from tea bags
- Fruit and vegetable stickers
- Styrofoam
- Tape
- Treated wood or sawdust
- Twist ties
