HOUSTON — In just a few days, volunteers will be giving away food, toys and services to those in need during the 45th annual Christmas Super Feast.
The City Wide Club of America said in addition to the food and toys, people will be able to get clothing, haircuts and medical screenings at the George R. Brown Convention Center on Saturday, December 23.
"Everybody pitches in and does what they can," said City Wide Club Regional Director Stephanie Lewis.
Lewis has been with the club for decades but said the spirit of giving never gets old for her.
The club expects to serve more than 30,000 families during the event and drive-thru distribution. The strain on families' budgets due to inflation has prompted the organization to prepare for a bigger turnout than in previous years.
"We're seeing that a lot of people may not necessarily be homeless or even unemployed," Lewis said. "A lot of the people that we help serve do have jobs and do have a place to live, but simply not enough to make ends meet."
I you'd like to help, the organization is looking for donations and volunteers.
"We're receiving donations of frozen turkeys, toys, coats, jackets, clothing - gently used, of course - because for so many this will be the only gift that they receive," Lewis said.
For Lewis and many of the volunteers, the rewarding experience is an embodiment of Houston's generous spirit.
It's a lot of hard work but it makes it all worthwhile because inevitably there's always one person that says, 'Thank you, ma'am,'" Lewis said.
