HOUSTON A downtown ceremony was planned Tuesday to remember all of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, including a Houston woman who died on Flight 93.
Flight 93 was the aircraft that went down in Pennsylvania. It s widely believed the passengers fought back and stopped the attack before it reached its target in Washington D.C.
Houston native Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas died on the flight.
I keep thinking about that often, said Lauren s dad, Larry Catuzzi. If you were ever confronted with that, what would you do? How would you act? The 40 passengers and crew of that plane, from all we know and we ve had lots of visits with FBI and CIA, they were truly heroes.
Lauren was flying home to California on Flight 93 when terrorists took over the aircraft. Her family said she tried to call her husband from the flight but got his voicemail. She left a message saying there was a problem on the plane and that she loved him.
Lauren s family created a foundation in her honor, including a garden and fountain in Houston s Market Square Park. The foundation also offers college scholarships, something her family believes Lauren would appreciate.
When you lose a child, I don t know really how you overcome that, said Larry Catuzzi. You don t. It s just a matter of trying to survive and hopefully doing some things that you think she d be proud of.
The Houston ceremony marking 9-11 was scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday in Lauren s Garden in downtown. Lauren s father and Houston Mayor Annise Parker were among those scheduled to attend.
Other remembrances were scheduled for the Houston area Tuesday morning.
