Houston's MacGregor Park to undergo $54M renovation

MacGregor Park has been around for nearly a century and has served as a popular space for gatherings and recreation for Houstonians.

HOUSTON — Houston City Council has approved renovations to the historic MacGregor Park in Houston’s Third Ward.

The 65-acre park along Brays Bayou is expected to get an extended trail, new amphitheater, pool and tennis center upgrades.

MacGregor Park has been around for nearly a century and has served as a popular space for gatherings and recreation for Houstonians. Its renovations are being made possible thanks to a $27 million catalyst gift from the Kinder Foundation.

"We remain committed to investing in projects that increase the quality of life for our community,” said Nancy Kinder, president and CEO of the Kinder Foundation.

Texas Children’s Hospital is also donating $1.5 million.

“For almost 70 years, the mission of Texas Children’s has been to help ensure the health and well-being of the communities we serve, so when the opportunity to help support revitalizing our city’s historic park arose, we enthusiastically agreed,” said Mark A. Wallace, President and CEO, Texas Children’s Hospital.

Other money for the project is coming from the Houston Parks Board, the City of Houston, the City of Houston’s Capital Improvement Plan, Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone 7, and a Community Project Grant sponsored by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.

Renovation construction is expected to begin in 2025.
