HOUSTON — "They were just going to get the groceries out of the car for Thanksgiving."
That's what Tasha Cook said her son and her son's friend were doing on the day before Thanksgiving in 2022 when they were gunned down in a senseless deadly shooting.
Cook's 18-year-old son, President Wynn, and his friend, 17-year-old Damarion Lewis, were shot in the parking lot of an apartment complex along Southlake Drive, which is near the intersection of Westheimer Road and South Kirkwood Road in southwest Houston.
What was supposed to be a joyful time preparing a Thanksgiving meal quickly turned into a nightmare for Cook and her family.
"Next thing I heard were shots going off," she said.
That's when she said she rushed outside to help. She said she tried to revive her son, but it was too late. President died in the parking lot. Damarion was taken to an area hospital where he, too, died.
The heartbroken mother said they weren't robbed and she doesn't understand what happened. She said they had a busy night ahead of them.
"They had gotten the TVs from the houses and put them in the living room. They were going to have video game tournaments throughout the night. That was the plan," Cook said.
Now, with the holiday season approaching again, the family is begging anyone with information to come forward to help get justice.
"I am lost. I am at a loss for words. Loss of Grief. Not understanding how to put together something that was stolen from me," Cook said.
Investigators said they're still looking for leads in the case. The Houston Police Department said they have no motive and no suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers.
