HOUSTON — Thirty-thousand Houston families got more than just food at the 45th annual Christmas Super Feast at the George R. Brown Convention Center on Saturday.
Organizers said because of the unwavering support, they reached their toy goal and were able to hand out Christmas gifts to the children who attended.
"For many of them, the gift they received today will be the only one they get for the holidays," Stephanie Lewis, regional director of the City Wide Club said. "So always, always, always. There’s at least one child that’s going to turn around and say 'thank you ma’am,' and that makes it all worthwhile."
City Wide Club is the agency behind the event. Lewis said this time of year could be rough for some families and to celebrate the holiday, many need a little help.
"When you know your fellow community members may be in a bit of a struggle, because you know, all of us are having to stretch our dollars to make ends meet," said Lewis.
Because of that, countless organizers, volunteers and local leaders rallied together Saturday, hitching up their sleigh of sorts and throwing on their Santa hats to bring out the Christmas cheer.
"Draw close Houston to family, said Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee who attended the event. "Draw close to your neighbors and make sure that they know you love them."
"To see the community come together to feed people and give holiday joy to people's lives is what our city is all about," said Pct. 3 Constable Alan Rosen.
Super Feast is considered the largest feeding initiative. Next year, organizers hope to increase take-home food baskets.
