Prominent Houston criminal defense attorney Mike DeGeurin dies at 79

Mike DeGeurin died from complications from a heart condition, according to his brother, Dick DeGeurin.

HOUSTON — Longtime Houston attorney Mike DeGeurin died Friday, according to his family. 

Mike's brother, Dick DeGeurin, also a prominent criminal defense attorney, told KHOU 11 News Mike died at Methodist Hospital from complications from a heart condition. 

According to Mike's law firm website, he rose to fame when he successfully got Clarence Brandley exonerated. Brandley spent 10 years on Texas death row for a crime he didn't commit.

Together, Mike and Dick DeGeurin represented Renard Spivey, who was accused in his wife's murder. Spivey was a TV bailiff who appeared on the courtroom reality show “Justice For All With Judge Cristina Perez.” He was found not guilty. 

Mike DeGeurin was 79 years old. Funeral arrangements are pending.
