HOUSTON - Market Square Park, at the center of Houston's downtown historic district, celebrates its fifth birthday on Friday.
The park, founded in 1854, reopened in August 2010 following extensive renovations. City landmarks quickly sprouted around the park and the downtown business district quickly flourished in the neighborhood. While many of the historic buildings are gone, a number of 19th century buildings still surround Market Square, reminding visitors of the history surrounding Houston.
After years of decline, the Downtown District, along with the Downtown Redevelopment Authority and City of Houston Parks & Recreation, initiated a plan in 2009 to restore and revitalize the historic Square to its former glory.
The fifth anniversary of Market Square Park will be formally celebrated in mid-October during "A Night in Market Square".
