HOUSTON — Both Heights High and Reynolds Elementary were ready to welcome students back to school Monday after last week's storms, but both campuses had to dismiss early because the AC wasn't working.
Houston ISD superintendent Mike Miles said the AC at both of the schools was working the night before but then the AC units started having problems in the morning, prompting early dismissals.
Students at Lamar High School were also dismissed early but that was because of a gas leak. Miles said students were outside too long so they decided to shut the school down.
HISD closed Friday after Thursday's severe storm caused significant damage to at least four campuses and knocked the power out to 136 schools.
Miles said despite the issues, 214 HISD schools opened Monday.
"All together, we had a very successful day," Miles said. "Yes, there were some air conditioning units that went in and out so some classrooms were a little warmer than what we wanted them to be, but when it became unsafe...we released the kids."
Miles said some schools that were closed Monday will open Tuesday. That information is expected to be released Monday evening.
