HOUSTON — Houston Independent School District officials announced that older students are no longer allowed to wear Halloween costumes to school.
KHOU 11 News reached out to the district after seeing parents talking about it on social media.
The district said schools can have Halloween celebrations that are short and cause minimal disruption to the core instructional day.
While elementary schools can choose to let students dress up, middle and high school students are not allowed to wear costumes during the day.
When we asked HISD if there was a reason for the policy, they didn't answer.
Full HISD statement on Halloween costume policy:
"At HISD, our priority is to provide every student with high-quality instruction every day. We know our school communities value their holiday traditions and celebrations, including Halloween. Our campuses may participate in Halloween celebrations but will ensure that these activities are short, respectful, and cause minimal disruption to the core instructional day.
"Elementary campuses may choose to permit students to wear school- and age-appropriate costumes to school, with campus administrators determining if and how their students will celebrate Halloween. Middle and high school students are not permitted to wear costumes during the school day."
