HISD: Fifth-grader brings gun, bullets to school

He was reportedly showing the weapon to other students.
Administrators at Gross Elementary School were alerted that a fifth-grader had brought a gun and bullets to the school.

HOUSTON – There was a gun scare at an HISD elementary school Friday morning.

Administrators at Gross Elementary School were alerted Friday that a fifth-grader had brought a gun and bullets to the school on Thursday. He was reportedly showing the weapon to other students.

HISD detained the student, put the school in lockdown and searched the building Friday but didn't find any more weapons.

The district sent out a robocall about the incident. Some parents were so alarmed, they showed up early to pick up their children.

"I was scared. I was scared, but how do you- how does a school keep a gun out?" asked Rosalie Lumahan. "I mean, how does it keep a kid from bringing a gun in school? I mean it has to be the parents."

"I'm all for backpack searches, yes ma'am," said Regina Pointer, a concerned grandmother. "You know they search us going through the airport, why can't they search the children?"

The student will be charged with exhibition of a firearm.

The district later apologized for sending the robocall to parents in the entire district. They said that was a mistake.
