Man dies in crash after swerving to avoid dog in road, HCSO says

Family members identified the victim as 27-year-old Joeramon Janas.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A family is mourning after their loved one died in a crash early Thanksgiving morning.

It happened just after midnight along Spencer Road near North Eldridge Parkway in northwest Harris County.

Officials said the man swerved when he tried to avoid hitting a dog, lost control and hit a pole.

"He lost control, continued westbound and struck a light pole on the side of the roadway," Harris County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Pete Villacorta said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and officials said speed could have played a role in the crash.

"We think speed ... there was a witness that did provide us with dashcam video and it looks like the victim's vehicle was going at a pretty good speed before the crash," Villacorta said.

Surveillance video from a nearby business showed transformers exploding near where the crash happened.

Family members identified the man who died as 27-year-old Joeramon Janas. They didn't want to talk on camera but said they were heartbroken and he would be missed dearly.

During the investigation, authorities said two different drivers drove through a barricade that had been put up to protect the crash scene. They were investigated for driving while intoxicated.
