New owner finds human remains at fire-damaged home in northeast Harris County

The house had been part of an arson investigation earlier this year.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — New homeowners discovered human remains in a house in northeast Harris County Saturday. The house had fire damage and was part of an arson investigation earlier in the year.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that at least two men were cleaning their new home when they made the discovery.

The human remains were in the entryway to the home, covered by debris, and appeared to have been there when the fire occurred. Homicide detectives say it is a full skeleton.

The house was on the 13300 block of Villagrove Drive. That is near the intersection of the North Sam Houston Parkway and the Beaumont Highway.

The previous fire happened August 28, 2024.

The new owners were cleaning the damage to resell the home. They had been working for two days when they discovered rib bones and a skull.

The previous tenants were renters who were about to be evicted at the time of the arson. They were seen leaving the house two hours before the fire was started.

Harris County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigation, homicide detectives and the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office were investigating. The Medical Examiner's Office Anthropology Department was collecting the remains and would work to determine the person's identity and cause of death.

Fire Marshals had been to the property for the previous arson investigation. The cause of the fire was still unknown.

This is a developing story. KHOU 11 has a crew en route to learn more.
