HPD: Woman found shot in Heights home after neighbors put out fire on porch

Someone set a doll on fire and then firefighters found the victim inside the home on Oxford.

HOUSTON — Houston police are looking for the person who they say shot a woman in her 20s in the Heights Sunday night.

Police said before they arrived, someone set a three-foot doll or figurine on fire on the porch of the home near Oxford and East 11 streets.

A neighbor was able to extinguish the fire to keep it from spreading before the fire department arrived.

Once there, police said they found the woman who had been shot in the torso. Neighbors we spoke with said they heard between five and seven gunshots just before 10 p.m.

“Me and my friends and my brother, we were just hanging out and we heard boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,” said Thomas Frank, who lives near the home. “We saw one of them getting carried into the ambulance and the ambulance stayed there for like five minutes so, you know, I assume the worst.”

Witnesses said they saw a red Camry speeding down Oxford Street in the moments after the shooting. Police tell us the woman who was shot doesn't live at the home where the shooting happened. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she's said to be doing OK.

According to police, there have been no arrests. They have limited information about the moments before the shooting.

This is still an active investigation, and police are working to learn more about the woman and why this happened.
