HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Harris County leaders passed a new budget and they also raised property taxes on Thursday.
It was announced by Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo at Commissioners Court.
The county usually has to put any tax hikes above 3.5% before voters, but state law allows an exception if there's been a declared disaster, which Harris County has been in multiple, including the May derecho and Hurricane Beryl in July.
The 8% tax hike will only apply to the 2024 tax year and it means the owner of a home worth $400,000 can expect to pay an additional $160 in property taxes this year.
