HOUSTON — A man was killed Tuesday after being shot by Harris County deputies at the end of a chase in northeast Houston.
There were four other men inside the vehicle that deputies were chasing. Three of them were taken into custody and one remains on the run.
The Houston Police Department, which is the agency investigating this incident, said the chase started after two Harris County deputies responded to a call about two vehicles involved in a road rage case along Orange Grove Drive. Those vehicles were a black Tahoe and a gray Malibu.
Deputies spotted the Malibu and attempted to pull the driver over but the driver took off, leading the deputies on a chase, HPD said.
The driver eventually crashed on Polly Street near Tidwell Road and all five men inside the Malibu reportedly got out and started running.
Two of them were quickly caught and handcuffed. The third was captured by a K-9 near Shadydale Elementary, causing the school to go on lockdown temporarily.
The guy who was shot ran to Bertwood Street near Tidwell Road where police said he got into a shootout with two Harris County deputies. The man was shot multiple times and taken to a hospital where he later died. The deputies were not hurt.
On Wednesday, HPD said the first deputy fired after the man reached for his waistband. The suspect fell to the ground and returned fire and a second deputy also shot him.
The man's gun was recovered from the scene, police said.
One of the deputies who fired their weapon has been with the Harris County Sheriff's Office for 10 years. The other has been with the department for 11 years. Both will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
