Pct. 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones unveils proposal aimed at overhauling Harris County Criminal Court System

Officials said things like aging technology and limited staff have led to a slowdown in court cases that delay justice.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones introduced a proposal aimed at overhauling the Harris County Criminal Court System to make it more efficient.

The commissioner unveiled the ambitious proposal Tuesday at commissioners court.

Officials said things like aging technology and limited staff have led to a slowdown in court cases that delay justice.

Briones' proposal includes ways to update old technology, boost judicial staff, streamline case management, improve court appearance rates and increase mental health support services.

Briones said the package can help reduce the current court case backlog and bring down the jail population.

“This five-point plan will supplement the other investments we have made and will continue making throughout our justice system,” Briones said. “We deserve justice that is fair, impartial and efficient.”

Commissioners court is considering the item Tuesday afternoon. The total cost is estimated between $10 million and $13 million.
