Harris County judge who accidentally resigned will not get his job back, county commissioners say

The court named Lesley Briones as the replacement for Bill McLeod, who had been on the job for less than three months when he posted online future plans to run for state supreme court.

HOUSTON — A Harris County judge who accidentally resigned when he shared his plans to run for the Supreme Court of Texas will not get his job back.

The decision was made during a county commissioners court meeting Tuesday afternoon. The court named Lesley Briones as the replacement for Bill McLeod, who had been on the job for less than three months when he posted online future plans to run for state supreme court.

Someone showed McLeod Article 16, Section 65 of the constitution which for judges of county courts at law considers any officer announcing candidacy for another office an automatic resignation.

People from the community spoke for nearly 6 hours at Tuesday’s hearing in support of McLeod, but it was not enough.
