Unauthorized burning led to massive fire at north Harris County scrapyard, fire marshal says

A thick plume of smoke could be seen for miles on the north side of town on Wednesday afternoon.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A fire at a north Harris County scrapyard near George Bush Intercontinental Airport was sparked due to unauthorized burning, according to the fire marshal's office.

Firefighters spent hours battling the flames and thick smoke, which could be seen for miles. Officials said it broke out around 3 p.m. Wednesday. The fire marshal's office said firefighters cleared the scene around 6:30 p.m.

The fire broke out at a scrapyard on Chrisman Road, which is just east of the Hardy Toll Road and just inside the Beltway.

Officials said crews showed up at the scene and saw tires and pallets on fire, although weren't initially sure how it started.

Around 5 p.m., authorities said the fire was pretty much under control and they were just working to put out hot spots.

No injuries were reported.

Officials said the fire did not affect any flights at IAH.

Multiple fire departments were at the scene to help keep it under control.
