Longtime Harris County community activist, Judge Zinetta Burney, dies at 83

Judge Zinetta Burney was a law partner, a justice of the peace in Harris County and served on the University of Houston Board of Regents in the 1990s.

HOUSTON — Longtime Harris County community activist and native Houstonian Zinetta Burney has died.

Judge Burney was a law partner, a justice of the peace in Harris County and served on the University of Houston Board of Regents in the 1990s.

Burney pushed for criminal justice for women and people of color.

"I'm saddened to hear that Judge Zinetta Burney has died. She and I go way back. She was a good person, and I appreciated the work she did throughout the Houston community," said Mayor John Whitmire in a statement. "I extend my condolences to her daughter, Harris County Justice of the Peace Sharon Burney, and extended family members. May she rest in peace.”

Judge Burney was 83.
