Two dead, another injured in fiery crash with wrong-way driver on Gulf Freeway, League City police say

An investigation into the crash was launched. It's unclear whether any charges will be filed at this time.

LEAGUE CITY, Texas — Two people were killed and a third was hurt in a fiery crash involving a wrong-way driver on the Gulf Freeway early Saturday morning, according to the League City Police Department.

The crash shut down the southbound lanes of the Gulf Freeway at FM 646 for hours as investigators worked the scene.

Police said a Toyota sedan was reported driving the wrong direction on the freeway shortly before 3:30 a.m. and soon after, a major crash was reported. LCPD said there were two people in the Toyota. The driver was taken to a hospital for treatment in critical condition and a passenger was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Toyota reportedly crashed into a Volkswagen sedan. The driver of the Volkswagen was also pronounced dead at the scene.

When officers arrived, police said the Toyota was entirely engulfed in flames.

An investigation into the crash was launched. It's unclear whether any charges will be filed at this time.
