HOUSTON — A 3-year-old girl died Wednesday after being left unattended in a hot vehicle, according to Houston police.
Editor's note: Officials originally said the child was 4 years old. Houston police on Friday reported the child was actually 3.
Houston Police Department officials said it happened at an apartment complex along Hollister Road just off the Northwest Freeway.
Police said there were two women in the car with several children. It is unknown how many children total were in the truck. They left the truck and went inside an apartment.
The 3-year-old was left in the truck, according to police.
Police said when the women realized the child was missing, they came back outside and found the girl. Houston police and the fire department were called.
She was taken to an area hospital, where she later died.
Homicide investigators were on the scene talking to witnesses and looking for surveillance. Police said from there, they'll contact the district attorney's office and see how they want to proceed.
HPD Lt. Larry Crowson said it's very important to be cognizant of where your children are.
"In this type of weather, it doesn’t take a few minutes to cause very serious illness or death for someone that’s left in a car," Crowson said.
CPS will be contacted to see if they want to take any action.
