George H.W. Bush Presidential Library partially reopens during government shutdown

The Bush family's gravesite remains open, although it will be closed on New Year's Day.

The George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum fully closed over the weekend due to the shutdown of the Federal Government, but there is some good news for visitors wanting to visit.

The library announced Thursday it is opening its museum rotunda — the entry area of the Bush Presidential Library and Museum that houses a memorial exhibit honoring President George H.W. Bush as well as the gift shop — along with the Bush family gravesite behind the library building.

Despite the shutdown, the Bush family gravesite will be open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. except on New Year’s Day. The museum rotunda and gift shop will also be open through Dec. 29 from 9:30 am to 3 p.m.

After the New Year's holiday, the same hours are expected on Jan. 2, 2019 and beyond.

The Bush Presidential Library and Museum itself, which is part of the National Archives, will remain closed during the federal government shutdown, however.

“People are coming from all over the country, and the world, to pay their respects to President Bush and we thought this would be a great compromise on the shutdown, to allow the public to view the gravesite, memorial exhibit and sign the condolence books while they are in College Station,” said David Jones, CEO of the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library Foundation.

The Federal Records Centers, Federal Register, the Ronald Reagan Museum and the George W. Bush Museum remain open and operational.
