HOUSTON — Dr. Tatcho Mindiola, the former director of the University of Houston's Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies, has died, the university confirmed Sunday.
Details surrounding Mindiola's death were not immediately available.
"His leadership inspired us to strive for excellence and to believe in the power of unity and purpose," the Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies said in a statement. "Dr. Miniola's legacy will continue to inspire us as we carry forward the mission he so passionately championed."
Blanca Blanco, the former publisher of Viva Magazine, also released a statement that said, in part, that Mindiola's efforts to encourage Latinos to seek higher education were "nothing short of remarkable."
Many of Mindiola's former students are now elected public officials, including Texas Sen. Carol Alvarado, Houston City Council Member Joaquin Martinez, and more.
