Flaring continues at Shell plant in Deer Park

The fire is expected to last for the next several days.

DEER PARK, Texas — Flaring continued through Monday night at the Shell plant in Deer Park.

The flaring started around 3 p.m. and kept burning into the night.

Editor's note: A previous version of this article said the flaring began at 9 a.m. but that time has been updated to 3 p.m. after receiving an update from Shell.

Shell said it's the result of a steam reliability issue with a third party and it's expected to continue throughout the next several days.

Shell said the flares have the potential to be smoky and they said they're working to minimize any noise, smoke and light associated with the flaring.

"We want to apologize in advance for any inconveniences this activity may cause. We will continue to keep the community informed through CAER Online and social media," the company said.

On Tuesday, Shell officials said they were continuing to monitor the situation and flares like the one in Deer Park are key to keeping the plant safe. They said they expect the size of the flame to decrease moving forward.
