FREEPORT, Texas Hours after a man s life ended outside a Houston strip club, his music lived on about 60 miles south of the city.
His life was music, said one man who gathered to speak out in Freeport.
Jeremy Hill was gunned down early Sunday morning in the 6300 block of Richmond Avenue.
Friends and family members said he was an up and coming rap artist known in the industry as Jit.
According to police, Hill and two of his friends were in their car waiting to pull into the parking lot of Legends when two other cars pulled up.
Police said the men inside got out brandishing handguns. That s when they opened fire.
Two people from the car were taken to the hospital and were expected to survive. Hill was pronounced dead at the scene.
Homicide detective Ramon Cervantes said the attack appeared to be unprovoked.
According to the witness we have spoken to, there s at least three to four shooters and 30 shots being fired, said Cervantes.
Hill, who was 22-years-old, was recently signed to a record label. He was the latest aspiring hip hop artist from Freeport hoping to follow in the footsteps of several others.
Fellow musician Jamire Shockley made a T-shirt in honor of Hill. He stood next to a group of other Freeport rappers outside the nightclub where many of them cut their teeth.
It doesn t matter if you re black, white or Mexican, he said. We re all family.
One of Hill s good friends, Shanell Fuse, said the entire community was in pain.
As a community we re close, she said. So when one hurts, we all hurt. One goes down, we all go down.
Police were looking for as many as four suspects, but had few leads in the case.
He wasn t a trouble maker, said Jakelian Shockley who knew Hill since childhood. He was just a good dude. A good friend.
