HOUSTON — At least one person was killed and several others were injured in a wrong-way crash on the East Freeway on Wednesday night, according to Houston police.
It started just before 9 p.m. downtown when police said they started chasing a stolen car on Chartres Street.
Officers terminated the pursuit when the driver entered the freeway going the wrong way. Authorities said the driver ended up getting in a crash while driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of the East Freeway.
When police got to the crash scene, they said several people were sitting outside the wrecked vehicles.
Investigators said at least five people were taken to area hospitals and one person, who was in the backseat of the stolen car, died.
Authorities said the driver of the stolen car was taken into custody at the crash scene before being taken to an area hospital for treatment. Police said there were several other people in the stolen car that ran away from the scene before they got there.
The freeway was expected to be shut down for several hours as investigators combed through the crash scene.
