The Houston Fire Department is investigating a fire that seriously damaged a church in Fifth Ward early Friday.
The fire broke out at the Mount Olive Baptist Church on Pannel Street just north of Market Street.
The first firefighters on the scene just after 3 a.m. found heavy smoke and flames coming from the one-story building. Firefighters quickly got the fire under control, but the building appears to have suffered extensive fire, water and smoke damage.
The fire may have started in an attic space, but Houston Arson Police were called to investigate the exact cause.
