Massive water leak causing problems in downtown Houston

It's unclear exactly what happened but a water leak is causing flooding near the intersection of Fannin and Franklin.

HOUSTON — An apparent water leak is causing problems in downtown Houston on Monday.

The issue unfolded near the intersection of Fannin Street and Franklin Street, near the Harris County Criminal Justice Center.

Officials with Houston Public Works said the leak was caused by a contractor that accidentally hit a water line. The leak was affecting the Harris County Jail and, according to Houston Public Works, they're working to reroute water lines to make sure the jail has water.

The water was seen flowing through downtown streets and pooling up in an open field.

If possible, you should try to avoid the area until crews can control the situation.

We reached out to Houston Public Works to try to get more information. A spokesperson said they have crews at the scene to begin repairs, isolate the leak and find the source.

KHOU 11 News has a crew at the scene working to gather more information to find out what happened.
