HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A man on a dirt bike died Saturday after being involved in an accident while being followed by an off-duty Liberty County Pct. 4 deputy constable in east Harris County, according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
EDITORIAL NOTE: The sheriff initially said the man died but later announced that may not be accurate. He then confirmed that the man was, in fact, killed.
The crash happened on E. Wallisville Road at Haney around 6:30 p.m.
Gonzalez said the deputy constable was in a private vehicle that had emergency lights and a siren, which were active during the incident.
As the man on the bike approached an intersection, a pickup truck towing a flatbed trailer was turning left. The dirt bike rider hit the truck's trailer while it was still turning, sending him into the air before landing on the road, according to the sheriff.
Life Flight was called to the scene and took the man to a hospital.
At first, the sheriff said the man died but later came back and said that may not be accurate.
"Was initially told he was deceased, but that may not be accurate," the sheriff posted to social media. "He may still be in surgery. We have three major crash scenes, two of which are Life Flight transports. Sorry for confusion."
Sheriff Gonzalez later posted to X that the man did, in fact, die.
It's unknown why the man was being followed.
